Tim's Tops'l Ideas ..........

John B's Waione

Here is how John B rigged Waione for Topsail.

Tim's Inspiration.

A.C. (Charles) Stock.

His boat 'Shoal Waters'.

Since 1963 has sailed over 68,000 miles in this boat.

In the end I have laid out my mod to be pretty much as John B has drawn Waione's rig for top sail.

As I write this it is early January 06 and have the mast in the shop. The mast extension is being done, and I have the top'sl yard and jack yard made up so far. Plan is to get all ready for the usual Spring launch.

I figured I had to go with the jackyard idea just to be able to ad as much sail area as I could. The gaff is not long enough for the foot of the top'sl to match and have enough cloth up there.

April 2006.

Big changes in my life right now. We are moving....new job etc. I may be late getting the boat and this new rig done for an early start of the season....but it will be done sometime this year.

I have decided on shapes and size. The mast is done. Just getting some varnish on it now. Making plans for rig changes by way of the stays, peak and throat halyards etc. I figured while I was doing the tops'l mod I would fix a few other little things that bothered me as well. Such as the throad purchase point being way too close to the throat itself. I moved it up a lot. The peak purchase is much higher as well. This should provide a much more controled fine tuning of the peak.
I wanted the side stays up higher so that they are away from the gaff jaws downwind. I need to make some parts and buy all new rigging.

I did a virtual rendering of what I should approximatly end up with. It is not exact (for example, the mast is too thin and I won't be re-using the old hounds at the top). Although it looks very real, this is Photoshoped. I am getting pretty good at this. ~:0)
